Santa Cruz, California – Cold Water and Long Shadows
At Santa Cruz, the Pacific bends around stone points and reefs to form long, driving right-hand waves that peel with remarkable discipline. These powerful rollers, born of distant northern swells, demand strength, nerve, and no small measure of stubborn pride from the few who dare mount their hulking surf planks. The water cuts cold, the cliffs stand close, and the ocean here does not seem amused by visitors.

FBI Field Report - Crime Scene Observation

Incidents now exceed local capacity for documentation. Pins placed along the coast mark missing bodies and missing persons reports in rapid succession. Dozens confirmed. Likely hundreds unreported. The pattern advances north with the swell.

Residents appear aware of their position in the chain. Private parties have retained shark and so-called “giant squid” hunters to patrol offshore waters with instructions to destroy any large marine life encountered. Several vessels have failed to return. No wreckage recovered.

Despite conditions, optimal waves continue to arrive daily. Dirk Hearst and associated surf riders repeatedly enter the water at first light and remain until dusk. Their persistence defies current advisories and common sense.

The coastal youth culture exhibits extreme disregard for self-preservation.
